Mindanao traders back constitutional means to resolve crisis

THE business community in Mindanao, through the Mindanao Business Council (MBC), expressed their support for constitutional process and rule of law.

Antonio Santos Sr., chairman of the MBC and Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) area vice president for Mindanao, said "we respect and agree with the sentiments and convictions of our counterparts in Manila that any change in leadership should be in accordance with the Constitution, which includes impeachment proceedings."

Santos also said "Mindanao has always been treated as a bystander to events unfolding in Manila and made to bear the consequences of their actions. The Constitution clearly provides for ways in addressing and resolving these issues before us, and beyond what is provided by the law, will only contribute to economic destabilization."

He said Mindanao believes it is long overdue that the endless cycle of political crisis plaguing the nation be halted in order for the nation to proceed to ensure equitable socio-economic progress. Once the political issue at hand is resolved, the MBC will continue its advocacy for drastic and dramatic structural reforms.

In expressing Mindanao's advocacy for a federal form of government, Santos said "the people of Mindanao would like to commence the process of amending the Constitution that would pave the way for structural reforms that reflect Mindanao's autonomy to address the glaring inequalities and inefficiencies of the present system."
