Palace mum on ex-poll commissioner

EXECUTIVE Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Sunday that former Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner Virgilio Garcilliano is too hot an issue even for Malacañang.

Ermita, in an interview, said Malacañang would not dare to handle or keep him especially now that a lot of people are looking for him.

"Why would we interfere with Garcillano since we know that he is in hot, hot issue?" he said.

He added that Garcillano is not even connected with the government now after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo opted not to forego reappointing him after the Commission on Appointments (CA) continued to bypass shim.

Ermita said the former election official is now a private citizen who is free to move around.

"But let us see what will happen to the order of Congress to arrest him (Garcillano). It would be unfair to say that Malacañang has to do with his disappearance," he said.

Ermita dismissed reports that former PNP chief now Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. and National Bureau of Investigations (NBI) Director Reynaldo Wycoco are looking after Garcillano.

A report said Ebdane had been ordered by a Malacañang official to take custody of Garcillano as he is the key to resolving the present political crisis. Wycoco was reportedly ordered to augment and provide Garcillano with security.

Garcillano has gone missing since the controversial audiotapes allegedly between him and President Arroyo were made public by Press secretary and presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye on June 6. (JMR)
