Security adviser raises terror alert
NATIONAL Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales has warned of a new wave of terrorist attacks, including the possible entry of foreign suicide bombers in the Philippines.
He gave the warning in a television interview after briefing the Cabinet security cluster on the overall status of terrorism in the country.
Gonzales said there are intelligence reports that suicide bombers from Indonesia and other parts of the world may have entered the Philippines.
He said suicide bombing is "very scary" because "that is very hard to stop."
Gonzales said the Philippines is vulnerable because it is a US ally and is involved in the fight against terrorism.
He also said terrorism has become "sophisticated" in the Philippines as shown by the confiscation of 600 kilos of explosives recently. He said there are 400 kilos more hidden somewhere.
Gonzales said it is time that Congress enacts the an anti-terrorism law to prevent persons arrested for the possession of explosives from being released. He said possession of explosives, no matter how large, is still bailable.
He said it is possible that those who have already been caught and released, such as in the case of the February 14 bombing, would be responsible for terrorist actions. (JMR/Sunnex)
