Malacañang twits opposition over 'tampered' poll documents

THE Arroyo administration Thursday blasted the opposition for bringing to the media the impeachment case by declaring in a press conference that it has a "roomful" of evidence that the administration prepared thousands of tampered copies of election returns.

"Bringing the impeachment case before the media only shows the patent weakness and desperation of the President's political detractors. If their evidence is strong, then they should have no problem at all in fighting it out in the House committee on justice," said Press secretary and presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye.

Bunye said the intention of the opposition has always been geared towards maligning President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo rather than obtaining justice.

"We believe the people are getting tired of their antics," he said.

Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo said the public should be careful because the truth and due process cannot necessarily be gleaned from pronouncements, press conferences and congressional hearings in aid of legislation.

Saludo said the media can be one-sided when the other side does not have the chance to immediately answer the allegations.

The opposition has said the administration prepared thousands of tampered copies of election returns (ERs) in 2004 at the Horizon Hotel (formerly Byron Hotel) in Mandaluyong City. The tampered returns, containing pre-computed votes, were allegedly switched for ERs in selected provinces.

The provinces reportedly included provinces where Arroyo came out strong such as Pampanga, Cebu, Iloilo and Bohol. (JMR/Sunnex)
