'Moma': The ups and downs of a 'different' love story

"Moma" is a story of two women who are both victims of their tragic past, who found strength and shelter in each other. But because of their painful experiences, the bond and future that they've managed to build may just be in vain.

"Moma" breaks new boundaries and issues about relationships and love. It is a thought-provoking film written by Susan Calasagsag.

The director, Jowee Morel, partly filmed the story in a typical urban poor community in Manila where he lived for a few years of his adolescent life. His depiction of the story is both dramatic and inspirational.

Shot in 24p cinematic camera, the digital short film graces the first part of a trilogy.

"Moma" is a collaboration of cinematographers Paul Vincent Pangan and Alex Espartero. Production design is by Rik Franco. It is produced by Outline Films and Calasagsag.

The cast are: Jean Victoria Martinez as Moma, Vivian Sabido as Carmen, Janine Alyssa Dañas as Mumay, Calasagsag as Aling Menang, Joel Fajardo as Gardo, Modesto Pacheco Jr. as Renato, and Ma. Teresa Dañas as Reza

The crew: director - Morel; scriptwriter/story - Calasagsag; directors of photography - Pangan and Espartero; art director - Franco; assistant director - Amrei Dizon; executive producer - Calasagsag; producers - Calasagsag, Simon Luckin, and Morel; production manager - Ephraim Avanzado; editors - Dizon, Teks Pabuayon, Michael Lacambra; assistant production manager - Elisse Aquino; production assistant - Dinna Lavapiz; technical - Ryan Cecogo, Emmanuel de Dios and Gregorio Camba

Morel was formerly based in London who made his local film directorial debut in "ec2luv" for Mowelfund's "Pelikula at Lipunan" last March. He is a British Filipino who is a graduate of City University London and has been residing in the Philippines for the past three years. He has written and directed scripts such as "Valentine 2000" and "Strictly Confidential" which were both staged in the West End of London. He now mainly concentrates on writing and directing for independent films collaborating with independent Filipino artists. He attended a film directing workshop under the tutelage of Eddie Romero in the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) and cinematography in Mowelfund Film Institute.

"I strongly believe that everyone has a special place in our society. I hope that this film will help people accept another person regardless of their belief, creed and religion or sexuality. Everyone deserves to be happy," said Morel.

"Moma" would not have become a reality without the help of the following: the people of Gagalangin, Tondo, Manila; the Citiland Shaw Tower, Mandaluyong; Saint Joseph Church of Gagalangin, Tondo Manila; MowelFund Film Institute; ProGay Philippines; Sangguniang Kabataan, of Gagalangin, Tondo, Manila; Blue Satin Production, UK Ltd.; PostHouse Music UK; GA Music UK; Pauline Southcombe; George Althaus; Sid Lavapis and Oscar Atadero.
