7th Cinemanila filmfest opens

MANILA Mayor Lito Atienza joins Cinemanila Festival director Tikoy Aguiluz in formally opening the 7th Cinemanila International Film Festival with appropriate ceremonies at the historic Manila Hotel. The opening rites were set to be held Wednesday night.

Also invited to grace the event are members of the diplomatic corps, boxing champion Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao, newly crowned Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman as well as prominent personalities in the entertainment industry.

The Manila Hotel rites would be followed by the screening of "Hidden Blade" by award-winning Japanese filmmaker Yoji Yamada at SM City Manila at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Atienza said this year's Cinemanila Festival promises to be bigger as 12 international films compete for the coveted Lino Brocka Award (Best Picture) while eight local films will also be competing in the new Local Digital Film category.

The festival will run from October 12 to 25 at SM City Manila, SM San Lazaro, Robinson's Place Manila, and Isetann Cineworld cinemas and later on in selected Metro Manila theaters.

"We are proud of this year's line-up of films, whether international or local digital entry," Atienza said. "They all reflect the different aspects of life as seen by the different talented filmmakers and actors," he added.

With the theme "Buhayin ang Pelikulang Pilipino (Revive the Filipino film industry)," the festival aims to promote Filipino films to international audiences and the world cinema to Filipino audiences and also to help develop new and independent filmmakers.

The eight local digital films to check out are "Ala Verde Ala Pobre" of Muchachos Bravos Filmmakers directed by Briccio Santos and starring Ana Capri and Ebong Joson and directed by Briccio Santos, "Ang Daan Patungong Kalimugtong" of Sampaybakod Productions directed by Mes De Guzman and starring Analyn Bangsi-il, Nemee Tocdangan, and Rhenuel Ordono, "Cut" of Pelipula directed by Jon Red and starring Joel Torre, Jao Mapa, and Shereen Ladera, "Dilim" of Creative Programs Inc. directed by Topel Lee and starring Rica Peralejo, Mario Magallona, and Emilio Garcia, "Ilusyon" of Digital Viva directed by Paolo Villaluna and Ellen Ramos and starring Yul Servo and Jaycee Parker, "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Joh" of Teamwork Productions directed by Gil Portes and starring Richard Quan, Neil Ryan Sese, Paulo Serrano, Justin De Leon, Maria Isabel Lopez, and Lina Dino, "Trrabaho" of Dirty Kitchen Productions directed by Ned Trespeces and starring Pen Medina and Sigrid Andrea Bernardo, and "Tuli" of Digital Viva directed by Auraeus Solito and starring Desiree Del Valle, Carlo Aquino, Vanna Garcia, Bembol Roco, Luis Alandy, and Eugene Domingo.

The international films in competition are "The Beautiful Country" by Hans Peter Moland of Norway, "The Child" by Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne of Belgium, "Clean" by Olivier Assayas of France, "Frozen Land" by Aku Louhimies of Finland, "The Kiss" by Hilde van Mieghem of Belgium, "In Casablanca The Angels Don't Fly" by Mohammed Asli of Morocco, "Palermo Hollywood" by Eduardo Pinto of Argentina, "Moolaade" by Ousmane Sembeme of Senegal, "My Nikifor" by Krzysztof Krauze of Poland, "The President's Last Bang" by Sang-soo Im of South Korea, "Rainmaker" by Ravi Bharwani of Indonesia, and our very own "Panaghoy Sa Suba" by Cesar Montano.

The culmination of the festival will be a star-studded and colorful awards night on October 19 at the Aliw Theater, which will be staged by the Solar Entertainment group headed by Wilson Tieng.

Set to grace the festival for this year are Pusan International Film Festival founding director Kim Dong Ho and producer Roger Corman, credited for the discovery of filmmakers Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Ron Howard, Jonathan Demme, and many others.
