Editorial: Toothless congress
FINALLY, the opposition made good its plan to create a Citizens' Congress for Truth and Accountability (CCTA) to hear the various charges against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Malacañang promptly dismissed the move as another antic of the administration's critics. Call it whatever name but that is part of democracy and part of the people's desire to know the truth behind the accusations facing Mrs. Arroyo.
Although we welcome the formation of the CCTA as a venue to present the charges against the President, we wonder what substantial results will be derived from the congress. Yes, we may get to see the truth but does it stop there? Since the body has no prosecutorial or police power to summon people, it is but a toothless tiger.
Convenors of the CCTA said after the present their case to the people, they will let the public decide on what to do next? Another popular uprising? Nah, Filipinos have grown tired of it. Many have said that we have had two Edsa People Power revolts but nothing has changed since then. Corruption and illegal deals are still prevalent in government.
It would be better if the CCTA convenors do much more than just present their case. File appropriate charges before the proper forum so that justice can be served and by then, we can get on with our lives and in helping each other build this country.
