Bomb-making materials seized in Navotas raid

THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confiscated 10 kilos of ammonium nitrate, used as a primary ingredient in the manufactures of bombs and explosives, in Navotas City at dawn Thursday.

Thirteen persons were arrested during a raid by the NBI on the house of a certain Pablo Obeja at 147 Pitong Gatang, Navotas City. Obeja however managed to elude arrest.

The NBI believed that the chemical compound, valued at P300,000, was going to be used for a terrorist attack in Metro Manila. "The explosives we seized are enough to blow up a building," said Edwin Andrews, one of the NBI agents who took part in the raid.

It was not immediately clear if the men are suspected of being part of terrorist groups that the National Security Council (NSC) claims are preparing to attack Metro Manila.

Security in Metro Manila has been stepped up, particularly in preparation for the 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, which will be held from November 23 to December 5.

NBI team leader Oscar Embido said Obeja managed to escape through the back door, and allegedly took some of the explosives with him.

But he said the team still managed to arrest 13 persons, one of them Obeja's brother Anthony. He said the 13 suspects will be brought to NBI headquarters for further questioning.

Embido said the raid stemmed from information his team received, that Obeja and his colleagues were making explosives inside the house.

Initial investigation showed the agents recovered at least 10 kilos of ammonium nitrate and kerosene inside the house. Also seized were several wires.

"When we first asked the men, they said the materials were used for dynamite (fishing). But they could not explain the huge volume of materials," Embido said. (ECV/Sunnex)
