Pro cage league sets 'Rookie-Sophomore' tourney
THE 2005 Talk N Text Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) All-Star extravaganza adopts a novel concept this year with the holding of a Rookie-Sophomore blitz game for the first time in the history of the annual classic.
Eight of the top freshmen and second-year players will be selected to see action in the unique game, which has a special designed set of rules and regulations.
Among those projected to be shoo-ins are last year's Rookie of the Year Rich Alvarez, Paul Artadi and Nelbert Omolon for the sophomore and Alex Cabagnot, Mac Cardona, Jondan Salvador and Leo Najorda for the rookies.
Second year players however who were voted by fans in the regular All-Star lineup are no longer eligible to play in the Rookie-Sophomore match as in the case of Purefoods hotshot James Yap, who earned a spot in the South All-Stars.
Nonetheless, league commissioner Noli Eala guarantees a fun-filled weekend awaits PBA fans in the three-day extravaganza to be held in Laoag City from November 24 to 26 and also supported by Chowking, Accel, Xtreme Magic Sing, Air 21, Eurolux, PGA Cars, Britmix, Richwell Trading, Westmont Pharmaceuticals, Toy Kingdom, Tobi's House of Nuts, First Quadrant and Purefoods.
"It's going to be an exciting weekend. We're very sure the fans will love the Rookie-Sophomore blitz game. It's going to be a fast-paced game and a truly entertaining one," said Eala. "Of course, there's the usual three-point and slam dunk side-events and the showdown between the North and South teams which is the highlight of the 2005 Talk N Text PBA All Star show."
The Rookie-Sophomore blitz game will be four quarters of 10 playing minutes, with each team entitled to one timeout per period from the first to third and two timeouts each in the fourth. Both teams are also allowed to use one 30-second timeout per half.
A 20-second shot clock is to be enforced, with teams given seven seconds to cross the mid-court line.
Basket scored on dunk is worth three points although a criteria will be set to determine what qualifies as a legitimate dunk. Game officials are the ones to decide whether a dunk falls within the criteria.
There will be no foul out but a player who commits a seventh personal foul onwards allow the other team to shoot two free throws when not in the act of shooting, three free throws on a missed shot from two-point area, four free throws on a missed shot from three-point range and a bonus free throw for every basket made from either the two or three-point areas.
