'Siglo: Passion', other books launched Saturday
IN 2003, a new comic book anthology was released by Nautilus Comics, Quest Ventures and Kestrel IMC. Entitled "Siglo: Freedom", it is a collection of graphic short stories raised the bar for local comic publications. With its unique concept of tackling the theme of "freedom" through 10 stories set in different decades and locales, "Siglo: Freedom" showed how the comics medium did not have to be limited to the genres of sci-fi and superhero fantasy.
Having a roster of creators that includes Palanca and National Book Award winners, internationally-acclaimed artists and up-and-coming young artists, "Siglo: Freedom" showcased some of the best talents that our local industry has to offer. After a sold-out first printing, distribution in the US and a National Book Award for best comic, "Siglo: Freedom" has established itself as one of the landmark publications in the local comics industry. But that was only the beginning.
On Dec. 10, 2005, the sequel to this groundbreaking anthology will be launched: "Siglo: Passion". Following the same concept of having different creators do stories set in different decades and Philippine cities, the new book now focuses on the theme of passion. Not satisfied to merely replicate the success of the previous edition, the editors of the Siglo series, Dean Francis Alfar and Vincent Simbulan, have upped the ante for this new collection. "Siglo: Passion" contains twelve 12-page stories compared to 10 stories of "Siglo: Freedom". The new collection now boasts over 30 creators, adding creators like Lenil Francis Yu, Wilson Tortosa and Quark Henares to the returning roster of the first anthology. "Siglo: Passion" also comes in full-color, allowing local digital painters and colorists to show-off their talents as well. The Filipino experience of passion is not only evident in the stories of the book itself, but also in the way the creators have crafted this very ambitious project.
The full-color edition of "Siglo: Passion" will have a very limited release of only 2,000 copies locally and will not be reprinted in this format again. "Siglo: Passion" is currently available for pre-order exclusively at Fully Booked and Comic Quest branches. Reserving a copy allows one to avail of a special discounted price of P500 (from the regular price of P850) and an invitation to the grand launch on December 10 at Fully Booked Promenade, in Greenhills, San Juan. For inquiries about reservations, visit any Fully Booked or Comic Quest branch or email Nautilus Comics at letters@nautiluscomics.com.

Philippine Speculative Fiction is a collection of fictions of the fantastic, short stories that explore the grounds of science fiction, fantasy, and everything else in between. Edited by multiple Palanca Award winner Dean Francis Alfar, the book collects 16 stories by both first-time authors and previously published/ awarded winners. The editor writes, "our country has a long tradition of the fantastic, with the old stories, myths and legends of times past. I believe that the fantastic is part of the Filipino culture, and deserves a place in Filipino literature as well."
The book represents a major step for Philippine literature, which for the longest time has been dominated by the relevant, social realist mode of writing. By reclaiming the fantastic and reintroducing them to modern Filipino readers, Philippine Speculative Fiction seeks to evoke the sense of wonder that has been missing in many of us for so long.
