Sexy actress sends Christmas 'gift', plea to fastfood chain
PEOPLE for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) Asia-Pacific member Pamela Anderson has sent a Christmas "gift" to Jesus Montemayor, president of KFC's Philippine operations, in the form of a bobble head doll that depicts a grotesque Colonel Sanders wielding a bloody butcher's knife.
Along with the doll, Anderson is sending a letter and a graphic digital videodisc (DVD) showing what happens to chickens before they end up in KFC's buckets. Anderson is demanding that the company eliminates its suppliers' worst abuses of chickens-such as cutting off the sensitive beaks of baby birds with a hot blade without using any painkillers and breaking the birds' wings and legs as they are crudely gathered for slaughter.
The locally produced doll is being sent to Montemayor before Anderson sends additional dolls to KFC head offices in other countries.
In the accompanying letter, Anderson writes: "In light of current concerns over avian flu, it is up to corporations such as KFC to recognize the part they play in creating such crises. Experts the world over have pointed to factory-farming practices as one of the causes of avian flu."
"Investigations by my friends at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) have found that chickens who are raised for KFC are bred and drugged to grow so large so quickly that many become crippled under their own weight. They are gathered for slaughter in a way that often breaks their wings and legs, and at the slaughterhouse, millions are dunked into tanks of scalding-hot water while they are still conscious."
The Philippines has been a major focus of Peta's "Kentucky Fried Cruelty" Campaign, with protests and billboards targeting the company. In addition to Anderson, Peta's campaign has received high-profile support from Sir Paul McCartney, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Jackie Chan, and the Black Eyed Peas.
Anderson concludes the letter by saying: "You will also find a Christmas gift enclosed, illustrating how the world now perceives Colonel Sanders and the KFC brand. I hope that you will do your part to help in this campaign, and next year perhaps I will send you flowers instead."
