Education office honors honest student
THE Department of Education (DepEd) will present 12-year-old Cristina Bugayong with a plaque of recognition, an official communication to all teachers in the field to cite the young girl's act in their values education classes, and at least a year's worth of school supplies.
Acting Education Secretary Fe Hidalgo lauded the act of honesty demonstrated by Bugayong from Tomas Morato Elementary School, the student who returned at least P300,000 worth of money and checks that she found to its rightful owner Friday.
"What Cristina did was a truly commendable act, and it is something that everyone, not only our students, but adults as well, should emulate," said Hidalgo.
"She is really an exceptional girl, because in spite of the fact that she hails from a financially-challenged family, she didn't even think of keeping the money to herself, and returned the money intact. She is an inspiration not only for students," Hidalgo added.
Hidalgo also said "for the longer term, we are looking for other ways where we could help her and her family, on top of all the things that have been offered to her by other people," according to Hidalgo. "We hope that this will serve as a motivation and a reminder to her about the very good deed that she did."
As for the moment, Bugayong have received numerous incentives and rewards from grateful individuals who were touched and inspired by her action, including a scholarship offer from STI, and a computer package from a grateful owner of the money. (PR/DepEd/Sunnex)
