Cebuanos to enjoy non-working holidays during Asean meet
PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Thursday declared December 11 to 14 as non-working holidays in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, which are the tentative dates of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit this year.
"In keeping with the tradition of the other cities that host Apec (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) and Asean summit on the days of the Asean summit which are right now tentatively scheduled for December 11 to 14, there will be a non-working holiday in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu," Arroyo said.
She said the hosting of the Asean summit by the three cities recognizes the importance of Cebu province in the world as the number one tourist destination of the Philippines.
She said Cebu is also important in the country's political scenario because "it can make a president." Arroyo got the bulk of her one million lead in the 2004 elections in Cebu.
Arroyo said the students, teachers, and public and private employees should take advantage of the non-working days to boost the country's local tourism and visit the beaches of Cebu and other tourist spots in the Visayas and in the country.
"All roads will lead to Cebu during that period and I hope all roads will also lead outside of Cebu for those who need to see the rest of the country," she said. (JMR/Sunnex)
