Gov't to appeal anew order on payment of airport builder

EXECUTIVE Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the government would file its second motion for reconsideration following the directive of the Supreme Court (SC) to pay the contractors of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 3.

Ermita said the motion was in response to the SC's ruling released February 1 for the government to pay up the Philippine Air Terminals Company (Piatco) P3 billion for the construction of the disputed airport terminal.

He said the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) is finalizing the motion and the other information that would be included in the motion.

Ermita said they want to settle all legal matters before the opening of the airport terminal, which he hopes, would happen within the year.

He said aside from the SC arbitration case, there are also pending arbitration cases in Washington and in Singapore.

He added that while these cases are pending, the Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) is undertaking the necessary repairs and preparations for the opening of the Naia 3.

Ermita said the government however remains open to backdoor negotiations with Piatco if it would help speed up the opening of the terminal.

He said the problem however is they have to come up with an agreeable amount which has also been referred to the court. (JMR/Sunnex)
