Bishops' group calls for 'prudence', 'sobriety'
CATHOLIC Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo appealed for calm amidst tension in the country following an aborted coup last Friday against the Arroyo administration.
"As we discern the signs of the times, we call upon all in civil society to exercise prudence, sobriety, patience and vigilance," said Lagdameo in a press statement.
"Let us meet this event with calmness," Lagdameo added.
He said the Arroyo Government "would continuously be haunted with questions of legitimacy and corruption".
"The situation is a challenge to magnanimously prove that your patriotism and concern for the poor and the suffering are of higher value than personal political survival," Lagdameo said.
He also called on the key players in the military, politicians and other concerned elements "to listen to one another and do not resort to violence".
"We, as shepherds, appeal to you to be open to reason and respect truth and the rule of law and to avoid creating the atmosphere of belligerency because innocent people are likely to become involuntary victims of selfish interest," he said.
Lagdameo also asked the Catholic faithful to pray the rosary so that peace would prevail in the country. (MSN/Sunnex)
