Baguio dart players rule national tourney
THE homecourt advantage worked well for Baguio City darters as they nearly swept all titles up for grabs in the Darts Council of the Philippines (DCP)-organized Philippine Cup held recently in Baguio City.
Hometown hero Ardy Briones came away with the biggest win by topping the Men's Singles event, the most prestigious among the titles up for grabs in the tournament. Briones upset 2005 Word Cupper Rey Sevillo of Highwaymen of Manila, 6-4 in the exciting best-of-11 finale to claim his first-ever national title.
Not to be outdone, Lany Dampag of Lovables-Baguio Darters Association Inc. (BDAI) overpowered another World Cupper, Rose Noble of Burlington, 5-4 for the Women's Singles crown. Dampag became the first Baguio-based lady darter to win a national singles title.
The Baguio darters quickly stamped their class right in the opening event, the non-rated Singles wherein Mark Queteng of Block 88 Nevada defeated Tarcilo Aben of Padsekeros, 5-2 in the Finals. Both Queteng and Aben are Baguio based.
Later, Aben, Briones and teammates Hino Digma and Rex Balangcod ruled the four-man team event by edging favored Los Bulleros Uno of Quezon City, 9-7.
The only titles that slipped through the grasp of the baguio-based darters were in the doubles event of the tournament hosted by the BDAI and supported by Toby's Sports, Winmau Darts, Terton Craft and Cozy Nook restaurant of Baguio City.
The Philcup Doubles title was won by Louie Manalaysay and Jun Reyes of Highwaymen for the men's division and Noble and Noel Li fo Hongkong-Burlington in the women's division. They beat Lovables BDAI's Ann Madrid and Dampag.
The men's overall title was shared by Padsekeros and Highwaymen which had identical 109 points accumulated in all events. The women's overall title was won by Lovables-BDAI with 74 points. (Press release)
