Education chief forms body to probe use of overage players in Palaro

ACTING Education Secretary Fe Hidalgo announced that the Department of Education (DepEd) is organizing an independent team on the level of the Office of the Secretary that will conduct an investigation on the alleged fielding of over-aged players during the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa held in Naga City.

"The purpose of having the Palarong Pambansa is to teach our children the values of sportsmanship, honor and integrity," Hidalgo said. "We cannot allow cheating at any level otherwise we defeat such purpose. We therefore will not stop until we get to the truth," she added.

The investigating body will be composed of DepEd officials and several individuals from the private sector. DepEd Undersecretaries Franklin Sunga and Antonio Inocentes will head the body.

The team will investigate the eligibility of the alleged over-aged players and teams as well as the screening process that was done during this year's Palaro. Hidalgo also plans to invite other stakeholders such as parents and members of the media who have brought the alleged anomaly to the DepEd's attention to be part of the investigation process.

"If cheating did happen, then our children were wronged and this has to be corrected. Those who perpetuated the wrongdoing should be sanctioned accordingly," added Hidalgo.

"We are therefore doing an independent and transparent investigation to cast away doubts in the process and we are going to invite representatives from the parents and the media to participate in our investigation," she said.

The independent investigating team will also recommend measures and reforms in the screening process that will help prevent similar incidents in future Palaro events. (PR/DepEd/Sunnex)
