Cinemanila to hold 1st SEA film workshop, festival

FILM director Amable "Tikoy" Aguiliz VI, Cinemanila International Film Festival founder, recently announced that the festival will be conducting the first Southeast Asian film workshop/festival in cooperation with the 31st Unesco (UN International Theater Institute's (ITI) World Congress and Theater Olympics of the Nations, Scenema Concepts International and National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The intensive workshop/festival, which will focus on the Sony High Definition (HD) camera technology, will be held from May 22 to 25 at the NCCA Tanghalang Leandro V. Locsin auditorium at General Luna St., Intramuros, Manila, and at the studios of Scenema Concepts International in Pasig City.

Twelve participants were selected to attend the workshop and complete their three to five-minute films, which will be premiered in May 26 and 27 during the 2nd Ministerial Meeting of Asian Media Content and Creative Industries at the Manila Hotel Centennial Room and also during the closing event of the ITI World Congress on May 28. The free workshop aims to provide budding filmmakers the experience to use the finest camera technology and to produce quality films.

Guest speakers from the international independent film community led by Abraham Lim from Los Angeles, California and Tracy Y.M. Hon from Hong Kong were invited to deliver lectures to the participants. Lim will conduct a lecture on scriptwriting with emphasis on short films while Hon will share her expertise in the use of the HD Camera.

Lim, an Asian-American native of Kansas, received his Bachelor of Film Arts/Masters in Film Arts (BFA/MFA) scholarship at New York University. While directing and shooting music videos for Riviera Films, including videos for "The Roots"S, Lim made a name for himself as a cutting edge editor. His 30-minute film "Fly", a tense drama about an Asian-American family and the two brothers who confront each other upon their mother's death, swept the 1997 NYU First Run Festival, with awards for best directing, acting, editing, and cinematography. FLY so impressed master filmmaker Robert Altman that he hired him to edit Altman's film "Cookie's Fortune" in 1999 as well as co-produced Lim's award-winning feature film debut "Roads and Bridges". His short film "Toy" premiered at Sundance in 2003. His recent film "The Achievers" will be screened during the workshop.

Hon, on the other hand, will discuss HD technology on film production, specifications, and advantages, demonstrate how to operate the equipment, and guide the participants on their hands-on test on the equipment.

Award-winning Filipino film editor Mirana Medina and Maylyn Villalon of Scenema Concepts will lecture on ways to minimize problems during the editing phase and provide reminders and some editing tips.

Free screenings of award-winning Asian films will be held during the workshop/festival at the NCCA Auditorium and at the Scenema Concepts Studios from May 22 to 27.

The Cinemanila workshop will be held as a component of the on-going ITI World Congress with participation from some 100 countries, placing the Philippines on center stage since 1948. (PR/Sunnex)
