Palace also sees end of insurgency in 10 years

MALACANANG agreed with the assessment of the Department of National Defense (DND) that the insurgent problem could end in 10 years as they consider “communism as a lost cause.”

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said the evaluation of Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz. Jr. “is realistic as communism continues to lose support”.

“The continuing surge of social, economic and political reforms — combined with strong action to uplift communities and provide jobs — will eventually wipe out the mass base of the insurgency and degrade its strength and relevance. Globally, communism is a lost ideology; domestically, it is a lost cause,” he said.

Bunye added that while the remnants of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) may be capable of staging attacks, these are isolated and usually occur in “far-flung” areas.

He added that aside from the communism ideology losing its “attraction” the government’s consistent efforts to address the poverty issues and other root causes of insurgency contributes to the weakening of the communist party locally.

“The Philippine Government is already winning the battle for the people and it is only a matter of time when the whole theater of conflict will come to an end,” Bunye said.

He however reiterated that killing of militant and left-leaning supporters is not part of the government’s campaign to defeat insurgency.

Bunye said the incidents are not being condoned and authorities are conducting a thorough investigation on the spate of killings.

National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales said solving the killings, including that of the murdered journalists, top the government’s agenda and his office is coordinating with other government agencies to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Gonzales also urged the police and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to determine if the media killings are related to that of activists.

He added that the killings are possibly the handiwork of groups that want to "create chaos and portray the government as a weakling before the international community." (JMR/Sunnex)
