41 overstaying retired Navy men opt to vacate quarters

AT LEAST 41 retired officers have volunteered to leave their quarters inside the Bonifacio Naval Station inside Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, beating a scheduled forcible eviction process against them.

Navy spokesman Geronimo Malabanan said 36 of the officers have already completed their departure while the other five officers are still in the process of packing their belongings as of Tuesday afternoon.

Malabanan identified the five officers as commanders Crisolito Agustin, of the Philippine Coast Guard, Auster Vailoces, Anselmo Cabingan, Roberto Reblora, all of the Philippine Navy, and Colonel Antonio Bisenio of the Philippine Marines.

Officials from the Navy's Housing Board were to serve an eviction last week on the 41 retired officers, shortly after the eviction of 56 officers and 115 enlisted personnel from the same compound.

But the board found out that 13 of the 41 have already left their quarters, apparently to avoid embarrassment. This prompted the board to serve the notice to only 28 officers who were told to leave in seven days or face forcible eviction.

The eviction was supposed to be implemented by an interim body called Task Force Bawi under Colonel Gioksan Dammang on Tuesday but the Navy deferred the eviction in view of the celebration of the Independence Day the previous day.

When the task force was going to pursue the eviction on Tuesday, the Navy found out that 23 of those who were served with the notice to leave have abandoned their quarters "while the five are in the process of hauling their personal belongings."

"Of the areas (which the Navy wanted cleared of overstaying personnel), this is the most peaceful. No untoward incident occurred because they voluntarily left," Malabanan said.

The recent eviction of 58 officers was marred by tension when one of the Marine colonels tried to prevent the eviction team from entering his quarters. The team had to kick the main door of the officer's quarters to gain entry, following a brawl.

On the other hand, the eviction of 115 enlisted personnel was marked by a minor incident wherein one of the retirees tried to block the eviction team. The team shoved the soldier aside and proceeded with the eviction.

Meanwhile, Malabanan said the Navy is also due to serve an eviction notice each to 39 retired enlisted personnel of the Navy and Coast Guard living in another Navy property in Camp Claudio in Parañaque City.

He said Navy chief Vice Admiral Mateo Mayuga "has earned the support of active officers and personnel for his firm move of evicting the unauthorized and retired officers from their government-issued quarters." (VR/Sunnex)
