27 nabbed in police's renewed anti-gambling drive in Luzon

TWENTY-seven more violators of the anti-illegal gambling law were arrested by police operatives in Nueva Vizcaya and Isabela in the latest offensive against all forms of outlawed gambling activities.

This developed as PNP Chief Arturo Lomibao issued anew the order to hit hard on illegal gambling activities, especially in the countryside where these are major sources of funds for the communist New People's Army (NPA).

"The President is firm and decisive in her marching orders to run the NPA to the ground. For our part, we will hit hard on the enemy to include their economic support systems and fund sources that sustain their terrorist activities," Lomibao said.

The PNP chief said jueteng activities in the countryside have been a major source of funds for the local communist movement. The NPA also derives revenue through "revolutionary taxation" from legitimate business operations and unlawful activities such as illegal-logging, illegal fishing, and illegal-mining, Lomibao said.

In some cases, the NPA members engage in criminal activities such as kidnap-for-ransom, robbery, contract-killing and extortion to raise funds, he said.

In Nueva Vizcaya, two teams from the Special Operations Task Force under Superintendent Alejandro Gutierrez backed by Special Action Force personnel raided a jueteng den last week in Barangay San Antonio, Bambang town where a noon-time jueteng draw was being held.

The raid resulted in the arrest of 16 persons, all of whom are jueteng "cabos" or supervisors, and the confiscation of P1,209 in cash bets, cellular phones, jueteng tickets, calculators and other paraphernalia.

The arrested suspects were charged before the Municipal Circuit Trial Court of Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya for violation of the anti-illegal gambling law.

Over the weekend in Isabela, the same team of operatives raided another jueteng den in Barangay Rosario, Purok 1 in Santiago City and arrested 11 persons while in the act of picking the winning jueteng numbers for the afternoon draw.

The suspects yielded P1,704 in cash bets and were booked at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Field Office in Santiago City for violation of Presidential Decree (PD) 1602 as amended by Republic Act (RA) 9287, and were subsequently charged before the City Prosecutor's Office.

The chiefs of police of Santiago City and Bambang Police Stations have been ordered relieved from post in accordance with the One-Strike Policy of the PNP on police commanders who will fail to stop jueteng activities in their localities. (VR/Sunnex)
