Arroyo leaves for Europe
WITH security forces on red alert, Malacañang is confident that the security situation in the country will remain stable during the one week that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is in Europe.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Saturday that security forces will remain on alert to "protect the peace" while Arroyo is abroad.
"Walang dapat alalahanan, maayos ang kalagayan natin. Our security forces are on red alert, pangangalagaan nila ang katahimikan at kapayapaan natin (There is nothing to worry about. Our situation is stable. Our security forces are on red alert, they will maintain peace and order)," he said.
Arroyo is scheduled to leave for Europe at 10 a.m. Sunday. Her itinerary includes visits to Spain and the Vatican. She will be back after a week.
Presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor added that during Arroyo's trip, she will "present" to Pope Benedict XVI her "achievement" of signing the death penalty abolition law.
"Importante ipaalam sa Santo Papa na wala tayong abortion law at divorce law tulad ng ibang bansa. Sa ibang bansa may abortion or divorce or death penalty, sa atin ang tatlo wala sa ating bansa (It is important that we let the Pope know that we have laws against abortion, divorce and the death penalty. In other countries, they don't have all three)," he said.
While in Spain, Arroyo is due to sign several agreements. Outgoing Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas will sign an agreement paving the way for Filipino workers to immigrate there.
On the other hand, Ermita said he and Defensor have repeatedly advised Arroyo to go easy during her foreign trip, following her 35-hour hospitalization.
He said while Arroyo is in good shape, they do not want her to suffer a relapse. (JMR/Sunnex)
