Medex down Royals; Rebels rout DPWH-del Rio in Socsksargen games
GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The Mindanao Medical Center (MMC) Medex Tuesday evening downed the Royals of the East Asia Royale Hotel, 81-71, to share anew the top post of the ongoing Socsksargen Basketball League (SBL) Inaugural Conference elimination round.
On the other hand, the St. Elizabeth Hospital (SEH) Rebels narrowly defeated the Koronadal City-based DPWH-Del Rio Resort, 95-92, when they encountered in the second game Tuesday evening at the Oval Plaza covered court here.
The match was crucial for the Rebels as the win allowed it to secure the third slot of the ongoing elimination while relegating the combined DPWH-Del Rio Resort to the fourth.
Both games were closely fought as combating member-teams raced to position themselves for the four-squad semi-final phase that is slated to open July 11 as scheduled.
As a result of its third loss, the Royals settled in the fifth rank with two more games coming against the Rebels and the win-less Sarangani Migs.
For its part, the Sarangani Migs would try to improve its zero-win, two-loss card when it would face the stronger Medex squad in the second assignment Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, the luck-less Tampakan Copper is reportedly gearing for its hometown showdown against the Medex at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Tampakan Municipal Gym.
Though not originally planned, the staging of a wildcard quarter final round is possible as the SBL Board of Governors chaired by Antonio “Tony Boy” Veneracion of the SEH Rebels would meet Friday evening.
The victory of the Medex over the reorganized Royals was the first in their so-many outings the past months, said Royals Alternate Team Governor and Head Coach Jonathan Tayoto.
The Medex led by just one point at the end of the first quarter but the Royals was able to force a deadlock at the close of the first half.
Doing seesaw actions throughout the third canto, the Medex reasserted a two-point lead, 54-52, with player-of-the-game Jonas Garces contributing eight including a three out of the 18-point quarter harvest.
Pouring 27 points against Royals’ 19 in the last canto, the Medex comfortably established a 10-point headway towards the final buzzer.
Scoring in both teams was well distributed with Jhimboy Bartolome registering 18 for the Medex and team captain Angelito Tabanao sinking 11 for the Royals.
Many spectators viewed the defeat of the DPWH-Del Rio Resort at the hands of the Rebels as a typical case of “poor” coaching coupled with erroneous referee’s call at the most crucial moment.
The highwaymen were doing well in the first half through the scoring combination of the brothers Jigger and Julius Sabijon, Rico Ramos and Syrus Anthony Silorio. The Rebels had the chance to overtake the only team from Koronadal City, 46-44, about one and a half minutes remaining of the second quarter and proceeded to close the half at 52-51 through the effort of Gomes who made a dying-second fastbreak drive.
DPWH-Del Rio Resort’s headache started early in the second half when head coach Renato “Boy” Guadalupe started relieving the first liners with the second stringers. At one point early in the fourth canto, almost all of the stronger players except for Ramos were out of the court. Without the more experienced assistant coach Vic Malinao around, Guadalupe appeared to be experimenting with the less exposed players until he realized the impact of fielding of less productive cagers during crucial moments.
However, Ramos who succumbed to bad fall during its face off with the Tampakan Copper last Saturday managed 24 points though he stumbled more than five times in the game. The team spent P4,500 for the CT scan on the head of Ramos that turned out negative result, said team statistician and information officer Rhena Diendo.
Julius Sabijon registered 17 markers while his elder brother Jigger produced 14 including triple trios. Silorio contributed 16 points including one three-pointer.
At the Rebels’ camp, player-of-the-game Nonoy Credo and Ian Gomes sunk a total of 21 points apiece, while teammate Bobong Yong fired 15 points along with Eric Lamanilao’s 12 including a three by three.
SBL Inaugural Conference has been supported by the Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Company that provided the SouthPhil Arts and Sports Promotion (SPASProm) the communication facilities for the live radio broadcast coverage of the games over DXGS-Phil Radio (Radyo PBA).
Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc., D. C. Ciudad Merchandising, Philippine Institute of Technology (PIT), WGS and Associates Agency of the Philam Plans, Inc. and Good Morning Native Coffee-Kape Barako are likewise lending material support to the live radio coverage.
