Former First Lady may run for Manila mayor next year: daughter

ERSTWHILE First Lady Imelda Marcos is "seriously contemplating" on running in the mayoralty race in Manila in the mid-term elections in 2007, according to her her daughter, Ilocos Norte Representative Ma. Imelda "Imee" Marcos.

The congresswoman believes that her mother is most likely going to win in the race if and when she is joined with five or more candidates.

There have been reports that around six candidates would be battling over the contested post and they include Manila Vice Mayor Danny Lacuña, Ali Atienza,
Mark Jimenez, Representative Joey Hizon, and Senators Alfredo Lim and Panfilo Lacson.

"If there would be six candidates running for the much contested mayoralty seat in Manila, she is likely the runaway winner in the 2007 local elections," the congresswoman said.

The legislator also said "now is the best time" for her mother to return to politics and consider running for an elective post in Manila because of many politicians are aiming to become mayor of the country's premier capital.

She claimed her mother has more advantages than all the other contenders since the former First Lady still has a "solid vote" among residents of depressed areas.

"If all of them would vie for mayor in 2007, my mother obviously has the advantage. Definitely the votes will be divided but my mom would have the solid vote in Manila," Congresswoman Marcos said.

Congresswoman Marcos said until now, her mother, being a former governor of Metro Manila, "still has a strong influence and charisma" among the people in depressed areas in Manila particularly in Sampaloc, Tondo, Quiapo, Binondo, Sta. Cruz, San Miguel and other barangays in the city.

The congresswoman added that in the next months her mother would decide whether to run for Manila mayor or she would endorse someone else. (DBP/Sunnex)
