Royals face off with Rebels in Tuna Cup

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The St. Elizabeth Hospital (SEH) Rebels (4-0 win-loss) and the Royals of the East Asia Royale Hotel (2-2) battle it out on Wednesday evening in the abbreviated championship game of the experimental Gensan Tuna Cup at Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (OLPGV) Parish Center here.

The Rebels defeated the Royals, 89-85, in a closely fought fourth elimination game August 28, the i-Cloud Company, 90-85, in the second game August 26, and the Bweno, 119-86, in the last game of the elimination round August 30.

The Rebels pounded the i-Cloud Company for the second time, 121-70, when they met again in the shortened second elimination round September 1.

On the other hand, the Royals routed the Bweno, 96-94, in the opening game August 26, and the i-Cloud Company, 94-82, in the fifth elimination game. But the Bweno of fish trader Chito Buagas hit back the Hoteliers, 104-97, at the start of the shortened second elimination round.

The i-Cloud Company grabbed its lone elimination victory by trouncing fellow marine product trader Bweno, 102-92, in the third game on August 28.

The Rebels, Royals and i-Cloud Company are member-teams of the Socsksargen Basketball League (SBL), while the reinforced squad of Bweno belonged to the Saturday-Sunday Basketball Club (SSBC).

The four participating teams would receive a trophy each. The Jigzpi Original Apparels owned by Manuel Pilapil and wife donates the championship trophy. James A. Gabaldon, Celestino P. Tamosa and Vergel Abordo would likewise donate the first, second and third runner-up trophies, respectively.

Supporting the Gensan Tuna Cup are the Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc., Fem Trading, Tikboy Lechon Manok, Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc., Swift Foods, Inc., Socopa Security Agency, Maj Romeo Robles PM of the 7th Marine Reserve Security Battalion, Michael Balabat of Pepsi-Cola, East Asia Royale Hotel, I-Cloud Company, Mr. Noli Cajutol of the Sarangani Aqua-Resources, Inc., Mrs. Antonia M. The tournament, under the supervision of SBL Commissioner Danny Billano, serves as experiment of the utilization of the OLPGV Parish Center as regular venue for paid games of the SBL 2nd Conference-Double D Cup Commercial Basketball Tournament from September 16 to December 21 this year.

The SouthPhil Arts and Sports Promotion, SBL's in-house exclusive promotion and marketing agent, is planning to propose to the SBL Board of Governors to move the SBL games in Gensan every Tuesday starting September 19 from the City Government-owned Oval Plaza Covered Court to the OLPGV Parish Center to uplift the quality of the league's followings and to raise revenue to support its operation.

Entrance to the out-of-town games of the SBL 2nd Conference-Double D Cup in South Cotabato and Sarangani are however planned to be paid to compensate for the added operational cost of both the league and the teams.

Congressman Arthur "Dodo" Y. Pingoy, Jr. of the second congressional district of South Cotabato voluntarily donated P200,000 for the cash prizes of the SBL 2nd Conference-Double D Cup but the league has to support the cost of staging the three-month tournament. (Press release)
