Bomb found outside Army camp during Palparan turnover rites
ANTI-ordnance experts on Monday recovered an improvised explosive outside the Philippine Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio while the military was giving a testimonial parade in honor of controversial Major General Jovito Palparan.
Army spokesman Ernesto Torres said four street sweepers found the bomb at the center island of Bayani road between the grandstand and the Army gym at around 8 a.m., shortly after the ceremonies at the Army grandstand started.
Torres said the improvised explosives device, composed of C4 explosives, grenade, two nine volts batteries and electrical circuit board, was detonated by Army bomb experts to prevent it from inflicting harm on people outside the camp.
"It was found based on the information provided by four street sweepers. They reported the suspicious package to the MPs (military policemen) and the MPs reported it to the EOD (explosives and ordnance division)," said Torres.
"Sensing it may endanger the people outside, they disrupted it," said Torres. The detonation created a loud noise that was heard by people who attended the testimonial parade and turnover rites but they ignored it.
Torres believed that the improvised bomb was planted by the communist New People's Army, noting that Palparan has been aggressive in the fight against the communist movement while commander of the 7th Infantry Division (ID).
"We have not arrested any person but since this testimonial parade is in honor of General Palparan, we suspect that it's the handiwork of the communist terrorists because he was aggressive in his campaign against the communist terrorists," said Torres. (VR/Sunnex)
