Gv’t agencies told to support private sector on competitiveness

ALL public offices whose operations affect doing business in the country have been ordered by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to work with the private sector in all activities leading to the September 29 National Competitiveness Summit.

Executive Order (EO) 225 signed by the President that enjoined all departments and agencies to support the summit was released on Wednesday.

In her order, Arroyo said all government agencies are directed to support activities related to the summit, including the pre-summit working sessions, the workshops and the summit proper.

She said the involvement of government must include the appointment of permanent representatives to the summit working groups, provision of technical experts during the development of the action agenda, and assignment of key officials as lead persons for the action points that will be identified.

Arroyo also said the government agencies must respond to requests made by the core group that organized the summit supported by the Export Development Council (EDC) secretariat.

She further ordered the government agencies to implement action points that will be finalized in an action agenda on competitiveness during the summit if the agencies are named as lead implementors.

Trade Secretary Peter Favila was told by the President to submit to her major developments related to the summit, particularly the compliance of the agencies called to work with the private sector.

The summit was called following a series of reports made by international rating agencies showing that the Philippines has been skidding in the competitive ladder worldwide and has been left behind by neighboring economies like Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Vietnam in terms of the ease of doing business.
