It’s a working day on Martial Law anniversary: gov’t
MALACANANG on Wednesday said September 21, the 34th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law by the late former president Ferdinand Marcos, is not a non-working holiday.
“There is nothing to celebrate except that we've been able to restore democracy after the Edsa revolution of February 1986,” said Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita.
Ermita said he wishes that the conditions that led to the declaration of Martial Law in 1972 “will not reappear so that it will not necessitate such drastic measure to be done by the President.”
Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, for his part, said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is determined to compensate human rights victims during the Martial Law era. He said Arroyo had certified the compensation bill in Congress.
Bunye, who is also Presidential spokesman, said the Martial Law victims have waited long enough and that it is high time that their sacrifices are recognized and compensated. “We hope that justice will soon be served,” he said. (JMR/Sunnex)
