Sunday, October 08, 2006 Another broadcast journalist dies in car mishap
A REPORTER for GMA Channel 7 was killed after the car he was driving in collided head on with a passenger bus in Lagro, Quezon City early morning Saturday.
Danifel "Dan" Campilan was the fourth broadcast journalist to die in a vehicle accident in less than two months.
ABC-Channel 5 reporter Hazel Racheta and her crew, Arnel Guiao and Ismael Cabugayan, died last August 13 when their vehicle also collided with a passenger bus in Camarines Sur. The three were on their way back to Manila after a coverage of the restive Mt. Mayon in Bicol when the tragic incident happened.
A report said Campilan was on board his Toyota Corolla car towards Bulacan province at 5:30 a.m. Saturday when the collision happened along Quirino Highway.
The driver of the Manila-bound Mayamy Bus, identified as Danilo de Vera-Cruz, surrendered to responding traffic policemen. He is under investigation pending the filing of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide case against him.
The bus was thrown off a wall after it hit the car of Campilan who was rushed by the responding policemen to the San Lazaro Hospital in Novaliches, Quezon City where he later perished.
Campilan, 24, joined the GMA Channel 7 in 2004. He had also served as reporter for government-run RPN-Channel 9 and Bombo Radyo Philippines, another government-run radio.
A scholar of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Campilan studied at the Cebu Institute of Technology, Florencio Urot National High School Mandaue Academy and Mabolo Elementary School.
Campilan's remains will be taken to the Funeraria Nacional on Araneta Avenue in Quezon City. He would be buried in his home province in Cebu although it was not immediately clear when the interment will take place. (VR/Sunnex)
