Malacañang tells public to remain vigilant v. terrorists

PRESS Secretary Ignacio Bunye on Monday said the sate of bombings in Mindanao last week should serve as another wake-up call for everyone as terrorism never sleeps.

Bunye, who is also Presidential spokesman, said the fight against terrorism must never relent, especially in terms of the vigilance of the people.

"Last week's attacks only strengthened our resolve to wipe out evil and we assure the public that the authorities are on target and it is only a matter of time before these criminals are brought to justice," he said.

At least three bombing attacks occurred almost simultaneously last Tuesday in Tacurong in Sultan Kudarat and in Makilala and Magallanes in Cotabato resulting in the death of seven persons.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr. and PNP Chief Oscar Calderon both went to Mindanao to personally assess the situation in the area.

Ermita said the alert level in Mindanao had already been raised to highest level as it is "extremely critical in Mindanao."

Intelligence reports said there are terrorist threats in populated and urban cities in Mindanao like Zamboanga, General Santos and Cotabato. There were also reports that there are also planned attacks in Manila.

A moderate terror alert in Metro Manila had been declared following the terror threats. (JMR/Sunnex)
