Marcoses to field scion for Manila mayor

Marcoses to field scion for Manila mayor

FIRST it was former first lady Imelda Marcos who wanted to run for mayor of Manila, now the Marcoses have changed their minds. They now want a member of their younger generation to compete in the Manila mayoralty race in the 2007 elections.

This was revealed on Monday by Ilocos Norte Representative Ma. Imelda "Imee" Marcos who disclosed that the family decided to have her 23-year-old model son, Martin "Borgy" Marcos Manotoc, run in the mayoralty race instead of the former first lady.

Mrs. Marcos would be Borgy's campaign manager instead, Imee said in a press statement.

She also said the former first lady was able to convince her grandson to consider running for an elective post "since he has lots to offer to the people of Manila, particularly to the youth."

It was only last month when the legislator said her mother had been thinking of returning to politics and that she was contemplating on running for mayor of
Manila.

However, Imee said some developments have taken place and that they have to consider some changes in the plans, which are described as "more advantageous".

The legislator said like her mother, Borgy could easily win Manila's primary voting bloc which are mostly composed of young voters. At the same time, the commercial-ramp-model comes from Tondo, a plus factor that would give Borgy more chances of winning.

"Borgy comes from Tondo. His dad (sportsman Tommy Manotoc) hails from Gagalangin, Tondo. Borgy's grandparents are all from Tondo. Borgy's lineage and roots are all native residents of Manila," Imee said.

Another factor that would give Borgy a big chance is the fact that the former first lady, being the former governor of Metro Manila, still has a strong influence and charisma among the people in depressed areas in Manila.

"Because of this, it is just like having Mrs. Marcos run as mayor of Manila," she said.

Imee identified Sampaloc, Pandacan, Tondo, Quiapo, Binondo, Sta. Cruz, San Miguel and other barangays as places where Borgy could get solid votes.

Borgy, who was born on April 9, 1983, may become the youngest mayoralty candidate in Manila's history at 23 years old if he indeed runs for the post, as compared to experienced politicos who are reportedly eyeing the Manila mayoralty post like Senator Panfilo Lacson, Senator Alfredo Lim, Representative Joey Hizon, Representative Rodolfo Bacani, Vice Mayor Danny Lacuna and former congressman Mark Jimenez.
