Palace wants probe on plan to suspend Makati mayor

MALACANANG on Monday directed the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to investigate and verify if there is an actual suspension order against local government officials of Makati City led by its Mayor Jejomar Binay.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said he expects to get a report form the DILG within the week.

Ermita said if there is a real suspension order, it is likely to be a preventive suspension to prevent Binay, Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado and the city councilors from influencing any administrative investigation on an alleged anomalous purchase of office furnishings.

Binay had claimed that a suspension order for him, his vice mayor and councilors was due for release on October 16.

He also said the suspension order was politically-motivated.

Malacañang officials earlier denied that they are engaging in political harassment, adding that even allies of the administration had been suspended and penalized as well.

The reported suspension order against Binay came at the heels of a ruling suspending Pasay City mayor Wenceslao Trinidad, who is also a member of the opposition, his vice mayor and some councilors. (JMR/Sunnex)
