Retired police officer named as deputy head of probe bureau

MALACANANG on Monday announced the appointment of retired Manila Police District (MPD) director Pedro Bulaong as assistant National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) director.

The appointment has stunned career NBI officials who expressed preference for insiders when in comes to running the NBI.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Bulaong's appointment as second in command at the NBI is "effective immediately".

Bulaong replaces lawyer Alejandro Tenerife, who is the acting assistant NBI director.

Bulaong retired from the MPD last August 2 after heading the MPD since 2002 while holding in a concurrent capacity the position of deputy chief for operations of the Presidential Security Group. He also served as chief of security of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo when she was vice president. (JMR/Sunnex)
