Lawmaker doubts good gov't appeal of high court ruling will prosper
SENATOR Juan Ponce Enrile said the Senate will resume hearings on the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) issue even as the agency filed a motion for reconsideration before the Supreme Court (SC) to reverse its decision compelling them to appear before a Senate inquiry into alleged anomalies in a sequestered firm.
By a vote of 13 to 0, the SC upheld the Senate's powers to issue subpoenas by saying officials of the PCGG and Philcomsat Holdings Corporation (PHC) are compelled to comply with Senate summonses.
Enrile doubted that the motion for reconsideration by the PCGG will prosper, considering the unanimous voting by the SC on Sabio's petition for habeas corpus.
"Maybe the SC will not even read the petition for reconsideration," Enrile said.
Other than Sabio's petition for habeas corpus, there were three or four other petitioners, Enrile said, and he doesn't believe that the court will be foolish to reverse themselves so suddenly.
Enrile said the SC decision was "a well-written decision." "Very straight forward. Very clear and no equivocation. No vagueness, in fact," he added. (CPB/Sunnex)
