Arroyo elated by stock market's record-breaking performance

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Tuesday rejoiced over the performance of the stock market Monday, which rose to a record nine-year high.

"Kahapon ang stock market ay umakyat sa pinakamataas sa siyam na taon mula noong bumagsak noong Asian crisis ng 1997. Bumubuti ang ating pananalapi, binabawasan natin ang pag-utang. Lahat nito ay patungo sa pag-angat ng kalidad ng buhay ng karaniwang mamamayan (The stock market yesterday (Monday) rose to its highest level in nine years since the Asian economic crisis in 1997. Our finances are getting better, we are reducing our country's debt. All of these are geared towards improving the quality of life of ordinary citizens)," she said.

Arroyo also said the government is committed to maintaining the current economic gains as she is determined to uplift the lives of the Filipinos.

She said the government would not stop until lasting peace is finally achieved as peace is the key to progress and development.

Arroyo said one way of sustaining the economic gains is by pursuing lasting peace in country which is a key progress.

She said there are many programs available to those who want to surrender and trade their firearms and swords for plowshares. which is one step towards achieving peace.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, meanwhile, said business and productivity are the main reasons why the government declared October 31 and November 2 as regular working days.

Bunye said there would be a big impact on the private companies and businesses if the two days were declared as non-working days because they would have to pay overtime and holiday pays to their workers.

He advised employees of private firms who want to go on leave on those two dates to talk to their employers if they could arrange something instead. He said as far as government is concerned, the two dates are regular working days. (JMR/Sunnex)
