3 foreign companies interested in automating RP polls
AN AMERICAN, Israeli and Spanish information technology (IT) firms are among six corporations that have signified their interest in automating the May 2007 elections, it was learned from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
The six companies, which included printer giant Hewlett Packard (HP) and its partner Spanish IT company SCYPL, completed their presentation last Friday.
Aside from HP, Israel-based Elad Resources and Filipino-owned Mega Data Corporation are the other IT firms that have completed their presentation.
The HP is proposing to handle the technology for overseas absentee voting through Internet voting while Elad laid down their proposal to automate the registration, canvassing, counting and electronic transmission.
Mega Data also known as Botong Pinoy is offering to automate the voting, canvassing, counting and even recount processes.
No amounts have been offered yet by the interested companies.
Comelec spokesman James Jimenez, meanwhile, said there is still no law enacted to implement selective automation so it would be premature for the Comelec to announce that they are conducting already the bidding for the May 2007 modernization project.
He said what they are just doing is part of preparations should the bicameral conference committee finally come out with a law that allows the use of computer technology in the elections.
