THE Department of Education (DepEd) and its schools will be assisted by potential volunteer teachers from the US Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV) should a partnership between the two organizations be finalized.

Education Secretary Jesli A. Lapus disclosed that the DepEd is exploring possibilities with PCV for the fielding of volunteer teachers who will conduct team teaching with local teachers.

“This will be a great push for our teachers in boosting their capacities and skills in teaching as well as using English as their medium of instruction,” Lapus said.

Lapus welcomed the expressed intent of PCV Country Director Mr. Karl Beck to continue the fielding of volunteers particularly in areas of Luzon and Visayas based on the needs of the Department of Education in raising the English proficiency of teachers.

“This development is very timely because the volunteer teachers will complement existing initiatives of DepEd to upgrade the capacities of our teachers in effectively teaching English, Science, Math and even ICT,” Lapus said. “The volunteers will also help our teachers develop teaching and learning concepts that will definitely facilitate the learnings of our children,” Lapus added.

Initial discussions made with the PCV focused on the positive impact of intensified English teaching on building the enabling capacity of students to grasp ICT and technical vocational education.

“This undertaking will complement the department’s present initiative to promote and strengthen technical vocational education especially in high school levels to prepare students wishing to take technical and vocational courses in college, or build their skills for other pursuits in case they are unable to purse college education due to financial constraints,” Lapus said.
