Tuesday, November 14, 2006 Arroyo hails Filipino cue artist's victory in world pool tilt
PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Monday said the victory of 2006 World Pool Champion Ronato Alcano Sunday night "serves as an inspiration" for all Filipinos to "work hard in achieving our dreams for the greater good of the nation."
Arroyo, who led Filipinos in congratulating Alcano for his victory over Germany's Ralf Souquet, said the event showcased both the Filipino's mastery of billiards and "the fact that we never run out of champions of excellence in all fields."
"I salute Ronnie Alcano for making the Filipino people proud once again by dominating the World Pool Championship. This victory serves as an inspiration for our athletes who will compete in the forthcoming Asian Games in Qatar, and for the younger generations to work hard in achieving our dreams for the greater good of the nation," she said.
Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said a special award would be prepared for Alcano who has inspired Filipinos to pursue their dreams of competing or joining international events.
"I think based on precedent, there would be an appropriate award to be given to Ronnie Alcano who very much deserves it, considering the major price he won. This is the World Pool Championship. I'm sure details are being worked out," added Bunye, who is also Presidential spokesman.
Meanwhile, Arroyo also led Filipinos in praying and hoping for the victory pf boxer Manny Pacquiao in his upcoming fight against Mexican boxer Erik Morales in Las Vegas in Nevada on November 19. (JMR/Sunnex)
