Troops seize huge hoard of bombs in Quezon province

GOVERNMENT soldiers on Monday recovered a large cache of New People's Army (NPA) explosives, which were reportedly intended for the conduct of rebel atrocities in the Southern Tagalog region.

Southern Luzon Command spokesman Rhoderick Parayno said the 99 pieces of dynamites were seized at around 4 a.m. from a supposed rebel safe house in the vicinity of Sitio Tambo in Barangay San Juan in San Narciso town in Quezon.

Parayno said the recovery of the explosives was made possible by an information provided a member of the NPA's Sangay ng Partido sa Lokalidad (SPL) in the area who recently surrendered to elements of the 74th Infantry Battalion.

He also said during tactical interrogation, the rebel returnee - whom he refused to identify - disclosed the whereabouts of the NPA cache site and even volunteered to guide the Army soldiers to the area were the rebel explosives were being hidden.

Quoting from the sworn statement of the rebel returnee, Parayno said the explosives, which came from Tagkawayan town, also in Quezon, "is intended to be used in carrying out offensive actions against government forces deployed in the Bondoc Peninsula."

Last week, government soldiers attacked a group of NPA who were undergoing assault drill rehearsals also in San Narciso town, resulting to the killing of a rebel and recovery of his issued M16 rifle. (VR/Sunnex)
