Filipino cardinal is one of Pope's economic advisers
POPE Benedict XIV has picked Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales to be a member of his economic team.
The announcement was issued late Tuesday by the Archdiocese of Manila, which also said Rosales would become a part of the Council of Cardinals that would study the organizational and economic questions of the Holy See.
Thirteen other cardinals from different countries were also named to the council last February 3.
Fr. Reggie Malicdim, secretary of Cardinal Rosales, said the apostolic constitution "Pastor Bonus" states that "the council is convened by the cardinal secretary of state, usually twice a year to consider economic and organization questions which relate to the administration of the Holy See with the assistance, if needed, of experts in these affairs."
Aside from acting as an economic body, the council "also considers the activities of the special institute, which is erected and located within the state of Vatican City in order to safeguard and administer economic goods placed in its care with the purpose of supporting works of religion and charity."
Rosales, 74, initiated the "Pondo ng Pinoy", an anti-poverty campaign that aims to help poor Filipinos and uplift their living conditions through donations of 25 centavos. So far, the campaign was able to gather more than P100 million from 12 member-dioceses, including those outside of the Manila archdiocese, said Peachy Yamsuan, the cardinal's media director.
