Illegal recruitment rampant in 5 areas in RP: employment office

THE Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has identified five places in the country where illegal recruitment activities are rampant.

POEA deputy director Hans Leo Cacdac said they are closely monitoring illegal recruitment activities in the National Capital Region (NCR), Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental, Laguna province, Central Luzon region, and Zamboanga City.

Based on data covering the period from January to November 2006, there were more than 1,000 complainants from different areas in the country who have fallen victims of illegal recruiters.

The bulk of the complaints came from the NCR with 230 cases followed by Cavite, Bulacan, Pangasinan, Laguna, Nueva Ecija and Batangas.

Cacdac explained that in the case of Zamboanga, it is obvious that illegal recruitment activities thrive there because most of those recruited went through the country's so-called back door to Malaysia.

He said recruiters promise non-existing jobs such as entertainers, care givers, factory workers, sales clerk, seamen and even nursing profession.

Meanwhile, Cacdac said they are set to implement measures to immediately stop these rampant illegal recruitment activities once the election is over since they are planning to tap the local government officials. (MSN/Sunnex)
