AN AVERAGE of 20 cases of violence against women are reported everyday in the country, according to Senate President Manuel Villar.
Villar said based on a UN Population Fund (UNFPA) report, at least one in every five women will become a victim of rape and one out of three will be subjected to violence and sexual abuse in her life span in the country.
He also said based on the same official report, it is estimated that many crimes in the Philippines are not reported to the authorities.
Villar said what Filipino women need is comprehensive healthcare benefits, consistent protection against violence, and a sustainable source of livelihood.
He said he is alarmed by the growing incidence of violence against women and their children.
Villar said the UN report also stated that violence kills many women between the ages of 15 and 44 as much as common terminal diseases such as cancer.
Thus, under Senate Bill (SB) 613 or the Women’s Medical and Hospitalization Benefit Act, indigent women suffering from illnesses like cancer of the reproductive organ or of the breast; pregnancy-related diseases; and illnesses or injuries caused by violence inflicted on them will be provided free medical and hospitalization benefits.
Villar also filed SB 620 that will provide literacy program for all expectant mothers in all public and private hospitals, clinics, health centers and other similar establishments rendering maternity services.
On the other hand, SB 622 proposes the establishment of the Office of Research On Women?s Health, which shall conduct comprehensive or extensive research studies on women’s health and shall provide the appropriate quality care to women. (CPB/Sunnex)
