Arroyo opens first retirement village in Batangas

IN A bid to make the Philippines an attractive place for retirees, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Saturday inaugurated the country's first "retirement village" in Batangas.

A Malacañang statement said the "retirement and tourism haven" in Barangay Kaylaway, Nasugbu in the province will cater to former Filipino citizens and foreign nationals.

During her visit, Arroyo toured and inspected the model unit of the Imperial Silver Town Retirement Village where the retirement industry's flagship project is based.

The village was built for those who opt to retire and stay permanently in the Philippines.

Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) chairman Edgardo Aglipay showed to Arroyo the master planned retirement community and tourism concept map prepared by the private sector partners in the project.

Aglipay said he intends to promote the country as a retirement haven in Southeast Asia that focuses on housing, lifestyle services and health care for the target market of foreign retirees and former Filipino nationals.

He said under the master planned map areas, the country's retirement haven would focus on Baguio, Trinidad, Subic-Clark, Metro Manila (Alabang, Muntinlupa), Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, Cebu, Samal Island and Cagayan de Oro.

Group Developers Project manager Miguel Puyat said the Nasugbu Highlands is a 1,300 hectares fully integrated master planned project focusing on eco-tourism and medical tourism.

He said the Imperial Silver Town Retirement Village is part of the Nasugbu Highlands along with Batulao Monte Grande, Metropolitan Hospital, Evercrest Golf Club House, La Salle Retreat Center and other developed facilities.

The retirement village, which has a land area of 35,100 square meters, features retirement villas, condominiums, amenities like spa and gym, health clinic, tennis court, swimming pool and park/garden as developed by the Korean firm, Se Hyun Development, Inc. (JMR/Sunnex)
