Monday, April 30, 2007 Poll body to declare UNO as dominant opposition party
THE United Opposition (UNO), not the Genuine Opposition (GO), would likely be declared as the dominant minority party, said Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr.
"Most probably it will be UNO," said Abalos who revealed that they are now preparing a resolution recognizing which is the dominant majority and minority (political) party.
He said UNO established that it has more affiliated parties, including deposed President Joseph Estrada's Partido ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino (PDP)-Laban and Laban ng Demokratikonmg Pilipino (LDP).
According to Abalos, they already asked for UNO officers' cooperation by "resolving among themselves" which should be accredited because of time element.
However, Comelec Law Department Director Alioden Dalaig admitted that they are having difficulty sorting out the affiliations of the candidates and it is the reason why they were not able to submit their reports to the Comelec en banc.
Asked what are these problems Dalaig said: "The endorsement is full of troubles."
He said there were even cases where candidates are endorsed not only by one party but by two or more that adds more hardships to their job.
But he assured they will be coming out with their recommendations as regards which is the dominant minority and majority party.
In the case of the dominant majority, Dalaig refused to give details on which among the administration parties would get the accreditation but he hinted that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) is likely to be declared as the dominant majority.
Aside from Kampi, the Nationalist People's Coalition and Liberal Party are also asking for the dominant majority party title. (MSN/Sunnex)
