“PARAISO: Tatlong Kuwento ng Pag-asa” is the first of its kind as it features three stories that capture the bayanihan (being heroes for one another) spirit. It is based on the lives of people touched by Gawad Kalinga, a non-government organization (NGO) launched in 2001 that care for the survivors of natural disasters, provides decent homes and help improve the quality of life of the poor.
“Paraiso” has made P200 million in the US alone. It is also been shown in Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, and in over 10 countries in Europe, including Austria, France, Germany, Sweden, Spain, and Switzerland.
"Umiyak Man ang Langit (Even If Heaven Cries)" tells the incredible experience of Jocelyn Llorente (played by Maricel Soriano), who lost her loved ones in the mudslide that buried a barangay in St. Bernard town in Southern Leyte. Jun Lana directed the episode produced by Tony Tuviera.
"Ang Kapatid Kong si Elvis (My Brother Elvis)" is a comedy about Elvis, a little boy who ate pebbles to fight off hunger and was adopted by a loving GK couple (played by Michael V. and Carmi Martin). Joel Ruiz of Arkeo films directed the episode produced by Butch Jimenez.
"Marie" tells the touching true story of Rudy Abad (played by Cesar Montano) who lost his wife in the 9/11 World Trade Center terrorist attack and later built the Marie Rose Abad Gawad Kalinga Village in her honor. Ricky Davao directed the episode produced by Tony Gloria.
“Paraiso” also features mainstream actors like Maricel Laxa, Gabe Mercado, Ricky Davao, Robert Arevalo and Lilia Dizon as well as stage and independent film actors, namely Nonie Buencamino, Soliman Cruz, and Irma Adlawan.
According to executive producer Bobby Barreiro, the producers and some of the artists waived their talent fees to help in the worthy cause. The production people and vendors truly made huge sacrifices for “Paraiso”.
"Paraiso" held its Philippine premiere last June 12 at the SM Mall of Asia. It officialky opened in local theaters last July 4. Movie gate receipts and donations will all go to the funding of GK projects. (Press release)
