Some holidays moved to Mondays

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday signed into law Republic Act (RA) 9492, which moves certain holidays to the nearest Monday.

Under the new law, the following holidays would be moved to the nearest Monday: Araw ng Kagitingan (April 9); Labor Day (May 1); Independence Day (June 12); National Heroes Day (last Sunday of August); Bonifacio Day (Nov. 30); Rizal Day (Dec. 30); and Ninoy Aquino Day (Aug. 21).

If the holiday falls on a Wednesday, the holiday would be observed on the Monday of that week. If it falls on a Sunday, the holiday would be observed on the Monday that follows.

This means that this year, Ninoy Aquino Day would be moved to August 20 and National Heroes Day, which is supposed to be on August 26, would be moved on August 27. Bonifacio Day would be moved to December 3 and Rizal Day to December 31.

Next year, Araw ng Kagitingan would be moved to April 7, 2008, Labor Day to May 5, and Independence Day to June 16, 2008.

The law also said for movable holidays - like Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Eid'l Fitr or end of Ramadan - the President shall issue a proclamation at least six months prior to the concerned holiday. (JMR/Sunnex)
