Sunday, August 19, 2007 New Line Cinema top brass visits RP to promote ‘Golden Compass’
NEW Line Cinema International senior vice president Nestor Nieves is currently visiting the Philippines for a series of promotional blitz for the Asian market in view of its multimillion-dollar epic movie "Golden Compass."
Done in the excellent tradition of "The Lord of the Rings," "Golden Compass" stars Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman with promising new talent, Dakota Blue Richards. It boasts of over US$200 million budget across the board, US$80 million of which went to special effects expenses only. The movie is slated for a global premiere in December.
Nieves arrived in the country last Friday afternoonfrom Hong Kong, accompanied by Wilson Yuloque president of Pioneer Films, the local distributor of
New Line's big Hollywood movies in the country, including the current blockbuster "Rush Hour 3" starring Jacky Chan and Chris Tucker. He has toured Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong in this Asian trip.
Neves led a very exclusive, special 10-minute private screening of the epic film at the My Cinema at Greenbelt 3 in Makati City last Tuesday. The event was attended by the Philippine media, advertisers, theater-owners and film exhibitors. At the same time, Nieves introduced the other major productions of New Line Cinema starring the country's biggest Hollywood stars which will fill the third quarter of this calendar year extending to 2008.
Nieves said of "Golden Compass": "This is New Line Cinema's biggest and highest-budgeted film for this year that is why we are going all out to tell the whole world what a very important movie this is for us. We spent an even more staggering amount for the production of this film, much more than the budget for `Lord of the Rings' considering that the LOTR was delivered in three annual successions. `Golden Compass' is just one film so you can imagine just how big this one is," he said.
