Thursday, August 30, 2007 TUP student tops 2007 national art tilt
THE winners of the 2007 ArtPetron, the nationwide student art competition of oil industry leader Petron Corporation, were honored in awarding ceremonies held at the Cultural Hall of Petron MegaPlaza last Tuesday.
Petron chairman Nicasio I. Alcantara, in opening the awards night, remarked: "For the past seven years, ArtPetron has been a very effective venue for promoting Philippine arts, culture, tradition and positive values, while helping launch a new generation of art masters."
With the theme "Alay sa Palatandaang Bayan", this year's ArtPetron drew a record 1,265 entries from art students nationwide. Celebrating our country's multi-racial heritage, landmarks such as lighthouses, bridges, monuments, churches, parks, town halls and other historic places around the country were captured on canvass and on film.
Besting 312 entries, the grand prize winners in the oil painting category are: Dave Alcon of the Technological University of the Philippines (TUP)-Manila for Batanes; Kauhayan Du Vatan; Emerson Guiam of Tarlac State University (Tarlac City) for Alaala; and Raffy Napay of Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology for Lupang Pinagpulungan, Lupang Libingan.
One hundred ten entries were received in the watercolor painting category, with the following declared as grand prize winners: Ronald Jeresano from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP)-Sta. Mesa for Revealed History Behind Mystery; Gerald Mungcal from Chasse Arteskwela (Tarlac City) for Royal University; and Julmard Vicente from the University of the East (UE)-Caloocan for Rangtay.
In the photography category, the six grand prize winners are: Jo-Ann Bolis, Ramon Magsaysay Evening Vocational School, for Binondo; Dave Buenconsejo, University of San Carlos (Cebu City), for The Lighthouse of Li-Loan After Rain; Marilaine Claudette Gapal, San Sebastian College-Recoletos, for Lipa Church; Jemerson Magay, Asia Pacific College, for Brave; James Brian Ona, Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Sta. Mesa, for Tulay ng Kalakalan at Hanapbuhay; and Dave Arjay Tan, University of the East-Caloocan, for Nahawing Ulap sa Hangin ni Bonifacio.
Runners-up in the painting categories are as follows: Oil - Anna Karla Rivera, Technological University of the Philippines-Manila, Alay kay Emilio; Angelo Tabije, University of the Philippines-Diliman, Monumento; Julmard Vicente, University of the East-Caloocan, Ang Naiwang Palatandaan. Watercolor - Joemel Mirabuena, Tatsulok Artisans Iloilo (Iloilo City), Hagdan Sang Padulungan; Fernando Ramos Jr., Chasse Arteskwela (Tarlac City), Kanlunga't Kwento ni Pedro ng Iloilo; Jeffrey Salon, Kurit Bicol (Camarines Sur), Bayanihan.
The photography runners-up include: Jo-Ann Bolis, Ramon Magsaysay Evening Vocational School, City Hall and Intramuros; Dave Buenconsejo, University of San Carlos (Cebu City), View of Cebu Cathedral from a Car Window; Raphael Dorilag, First Academy for Computer Arts, Tulay ng Malagonlong; Graziela Isidro, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Tribute to KKK Monument; Al Ameer Marco Lawan, Ramon Magsaysay Evening Vocational School, The Traditional Filipino Arko; Maria Charmaine Layno, Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation, Paco Park.
The grand winners in the painting categories received a cash prize of P50,000 and an ArtPetron trophy designed by national artist and chairman of the ArtPetron board of judges Napoleon Abueva. Runners-up received P20,000 cash and an ArtPetron trophy. In the photography category, grand prize winners received a cash prize of P30,000 and an Abueva-designed plaque, while runners-up received P15,000 cash and an ArtPetron glass trophy. All qualified participating artists received a Certificate of Appreciation. The school or museum-based class of grand prize winners of the painting category also received a special gift from Petron Corporation.
ArtPetron has been recognized by various award-giving bodies. This year, it received five Anvil Awards of Excellence from the Public Relations Society of the Philippines. It was also awarded a Silver IMCEA (Integrated Marketing Communications Effectiveness Award).
In closing, Petron president Khalid Al-Faddagh, remarked: "I take pride in the fact that it was during my stay in Petron that we were able to publish a book called Brushstrokes from the Heart.
This is the first book on Filipino youth artistry that highlights the winning artworks of ArtPetron contestants as well as their heartwarming success stories.
As ArtPetron touched their lives, so too have they touched the lives of thousands of our stakeholders. I bring this book and this colorful ArtPetron experience with me back to Saudi, proud that I have been part of a company that constantly hones the inherent creativity of the Filipinos."
