Tuesday, October 23, 2007 Education office initiates renovation of Teachers' Pavilion
THE Department of Education (DepEd) taps the assistance of Philippine Public School Teachers Association (PPSTA) and Philippine Tuberculosis Society (PTSI) to renovate the Teachers' Pavilion -- a special section at Quezon Institute that gives free hospitalization for teachers afflicted with tuberculosis (TB).
The DepEd's move is part of its thrust to deliver health services to teaching and non-teaching personnel.
"We should take care of the well-being of our teachers because the state of their health directly affects the performance of our students," Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said.
DepEd health and nutrition director Thelma Santos will soon finalize the details of the proposed renovation with representatives of PPSTA and PTSI.
The department aims to address not only the renovation of the Teachers' Pavilion but the provision of financial assistance and medical equipment as well.
The Teachers' Pavilion in Quezon City was constructed on April 1, 1937 exclusively for free hospitalization of public school teachers who were afflicted with TB. World War II reduced the structure to ruins. Through the efforts of the first female senator Geronima Pecson, reconstruction of the pavilion immediately started after the war.
DepEd Order 67 s. 2007 created a task force to facilitate the renovation of the Teachers' Pavilion including the resolution of issues concerning ownership, funding, and coverage of pavilion services. (Press release)
