Saturday, November 03, 2007 Watchdog opposes Macarambon's appointment to poll body
THE Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) is dismayed with the appointment of Mindanao Regional Trial Court Judge Moslemen Macarambon to the Commission on Elections (COmelec) without proper consultations.
"We are only asking that the choosing of a Comelec commissioner should be made in the public," said PPCRV chairperson Henrietta de Villa.
De Villa said prior to the appointment of Macarambon, they were furnished a list of nominees for the Comelec commissioner post but they were shocked when Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita announced the judge's appointment.
She criticized the lack of consultations from the stakeholders considering that the commission needs trustworthy and credible people after it is being linked to various irregularities, including the "Hello Garci" scandal.
According to de Villa, they oppose Macarambon's appointment because she is associated with former Comelec commissioner Virgilio Garcillano Jr., who was accused of manipulating the results of the May 2004 presidential elections to ensure the victory of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
"We've been hearing a lot that Macarambon is a classmate of commissioner Garcillano, that's why we are opposing her appointment. It is an insult to the world, a legacy to its lowest order," she said. (MSN/Sunnex)
